The Roccat Kave XTD Analog is certainly built with gamers in mind, but it is quite sophisticated compared to an average gaming headset. Along with its understated styling and chunky earphones, it packs a lot of sophisticated hardware under the hood. Unlike most headsets which confine themselves to just a single driver in each earcup, this has two full size, 40mm drivers and a 30mm rumble unit in each.

Roccat has even taken the production of this headset to the nth degree and angled all of the drivers at a specific 12 degrees, which it claims matches the natural form of the human ear and makes for better sound quality. It has also used high quality materials for its construction, which should make it sturdy and flexible enough to avoid damage during transit.

roccat-tools is only for mice and keyboards. Your Kave is supported out of the box. Plug it in, configure your desktops sound settings to use this device instead of your internal sound card and you're done.

The name implies that the Roccat Kave XTD 5.1 Digital headset provides virtual surround sound but in fact it has three 40mm driver units in each earcup, giving you front, rear and centre channels though you can use the provided software to switch to stereo sound if you prefer. The earcups are leather over foam which makes them quite comfortable although they could get warm after extended periods of time and the microphone boom is removable for when it would be in your way. They also have noise cancellation and the ability to pair with a phone over Bluetooth and an integrated sound card, all part of the reason that the headset is $150. Modders-Inc were impressed by that soundcards four speaker plugs on the rear allowing you to switch between sending 5.1 signal to the Kave XTD or to external speakers. Audio reviews are always very subjective as it is difficult to rate perceived sound quality for anyone but yourself but you should still check out Modders-Inc's take on the software and hardware in their full review.

With two 40mm drivers and a 30mm woofer in each ear, the Kave XTD 5.1 Analog is able to deliver very accurate positional audio. We particularly noticed the effect in tense rounds of Counter Strike, where we were the only player left on our team. Listening out for any indication of enemy players becomes critical, and we had more luck accurately predicting when opponents were nearby with the Kave than with a stereo headset.

Sound quality is less impressive, but is by no means bad. Despite having dedicated woofer drivers the Kave isn't boomy or bass-heavy, even with the bass volume dialled up to full. It's incredibly precise, with a sharp, almost shrill high-end designed to give more emphasis to sound effects like gunshots, breaking glass and tyre squeals in games.

There's no dedicated Music mode, but Movie works well for most musical genres; it tightens up the bass and mid-range, while dialling down the crispness of the high-end present in Game mode to create a more pleasant. We could comfortably listen to music throughout a working day with the Kave, then switch to game mode and play without having to make any driver adjustments or tweak the individual driver volumes. As it's an analog headset there's nothing to install at all, meaning you can easily use it on multiple PCs and laptops without having to remember to install a software suite.

With the Savu back in its original form I plugged it in and allowed for the basic driver to install. Once the Savu powers up, it starts to pulse a rainbow of colors. It just so happens that this purple color in the LEDs looked the best in the images. Remember, there are 16,799,999 other colors as well to pick from in your selection.

Under Advanced Controls you can set the sensitivity to both the X and Y axis movements to the mouse as well as change the polling rate of the Savu. At the bottom you can choose from one of the 16 pre-set color choices, or you can use the custom color bar and find one of over sixteen million specific colors. On the right you have the option to pick or turn off the voice over that announces the changes of various options and the ability to reset the driver if needed.
